Attempts to break the deadlock by frontal machine gun assaults led to enormous casualties and the development of new, more horrific weapons.
On the battlefield, massed artillery, gas and the introduction of the tank gave the war a new dimension. In the air, the advent o the bomber brought civilians face to face with the realities of a
modern war. At sea, the submarine disrupted shipping and put entire countries in peril.
After two and a half years the war ground to a bloody stalemate.
Finally, on April 6,1917, President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany and the American Expedition Forces (A.E.F.) were on the way 'over there"".
By November 1918 about 9 million allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen had lost their lives. This authentic film documentary gives you a view of the first of the century's truly global wars.
Most historians agree that the A.E.F. turned the tide of battle from possible defeat into allied victory on the western front.
